Panavision Australia is the biggest motion picture camera rental company in Australia.
The format of the Panavision catalogues had been tightly defined by many previous editions. The problem was that in 2004 the squeeze was on. The budget had been radically slashed, but Panavion still needed the catalogue to be slick and classy.
The die cut dividers (and associated hand collated sections) and the celloglazed finish of previous editions had to go to meet the budget. The plan was to spend small on the printing but to save the look with some really nice stocks and a simple elegant design.
I took elements from the existing Panavision Ground Glass logo and added the silhouetted shape of a Panaflex camera. The cover consisted of this logo plus some very simple type. It was printed with silver metallic ink and embossed. The result is that you can't help but run your fingers over the cover to feel the textures and pillowy embossing.
Inside I used a couple of pages of a translucent metallic flecked stock and lightly printed some images to give a shadowy look. The bulk of the pages were printed two colour incorporating duotones, keeping the cost down yet not compromising the quality.
A great result; problem was that this catalogue was so cheap that it set a dangerous precedent for the budget of future catalogues.
